The Reason behind the Captivating Blue Color of Blue Diamonds
Colored diamonds usually get their color because of the presence of certain impurities in their chemical structure. When it comes to blue diamonds, it is because of the presence of boron atoms. Note that boron is one of the rarest minerals that you can find below the Earth’s crust. To be precise, only 0.001% of the Earth crust contains boron.
Technically, when the quantity of nitrogen atoms is low in a diamond during its formation, and some boron impurities hit it, the stones will get a natural bluish tint. As the amount of boron impurities go up, the color intensity of the diamond will also go deeper, in turn, making the blue diamond more valuable.
You may notice that some blue diamonds tend to exhibit a secondary hue as well, such as grey or green. Here, the green color occurs because of irradiation or the presence of nitrogen impurities. In the case of grayish blue diamonds, they get the secondary hue because of the presence of hydrogen impurities.
